Soil
The Foundation of a Healthy Garden
Healthy soil is the heart of any thriving garden, and at BOTANICA Escario, we create our own “black gold” through composting and vermiculture (worm farming). Instead of sending organic waste to landfills, we transform it into nutrient-rich soil amendments that feed our plants naturally.
What is Composting?
Composting is nature’s recycling system. Micro-organisms break down organic materials— kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, fallen leaves—into a dark, crumbly material called humus. This finished compost:
-
Improves soil structure and water retention
-
Provides slow-release nutrients to plants
-
Increases beneficial soil microorganisms
-
Reduces the need for chemical fertilizers
-
Helps suppress plant diseases
The Composting Process:
Our compost bins use the “hot composting” method, which produces finished compost in 6-8 weeks
-
Layering: We alternate green materials (nitrogen-rich: fresh grass, kitchen scraps) with brown materials (carbon-rich: dried leaves, shredded paper) in roughly a 1:2 ratio
-
Moisture management: We keep the pile as moist as a wrung-out sponge
-
Aeration: We turn the pile every 5-7 days to introduce oxygen and maintain heat
-
Temperature monitoring: The pile heats to 55-65°C (130-150°F), which kills weed seeds and pathogens
-
Curing: Once decomposition slows, we let the compost cure for 2-4 weeks before use
Vermiculture: Worm Composting at Work
While our hot compost handles large volumes of garden waste, our vermiculture system specializes in processing kitchen scraps into premium worm castings—one of nature’s most perfect fertilizers.
The Vermiculture Process:
-
Worm bin setup: We use raised beds with drainage and shade covering
-
Bedding preparation: Shredded paper, coconut coir, and aged compost create a comfortable home
-
Feeding: Kitchen scraps are buried in different sections on a rotating schedule
-
Harvesting: Every 2-3 months, we harvest worm castings by shifting worms to one side with fresh food
-
Worm tea collection: Liquid that drains from the beds becomes a powerful liquid fertilizer
Benefits of Worm Castings:
5x more nitrogen than regular compost
7x more phosphorus
11x more potassium
Contains beneficial microorganisms and growth hormones
Improves soil structure and water retention
Odorless and easy to apply
